UI Big Update

Hi!

Yesterday I saw a video about the big difference between the users who donate and the users who download Blender and I must say that this is because those who donate have managed to make money from it. Even to this day, there is a lot software that is cracked and behind the scenes and the companies cannot quantify or show it.

My suggestion is the following:

Rhino is my first modeling tool to go to because I learned it 10 years ago and because it has a command panel that I would never give up to. On top, it rarely crashes. Besides the panel, the UI has only 1 layer of buttons, instead of buttons that lead to other menus and so on. These days we have to learn more than 1 software to get by.

In my view, Blender should have a command panel where a user should type any kind of button that he needs and an AI tool that can translate a description of an operation into a set of commands that can be typed into the panel. You might be wondering if people would actually use it, but in reality it is much easier to remember and type words than it is to remember buttons and to figure out their paths.

Thanks for reading!

Hi, welcome to Blender Community and RCS.

Please use a title that actually describes the proposal, "UI Big Update" is just too vague.

I'd avoid comparing Blender to a (proprietary) software as much as possible. That's potential for troubles when proprietary, and in the first place it doesn't make a good feature proposal since it assumes that both community members and developers are already familiar with what you refer too, which you can't guarantee.

See Copyright guidelines for devtalk - Site Feedback - Developer Forum for more context on license matters.

And to begin with, we don't really have to "copy" anything or add new systems, we can also just make our current tools better. Which is also simpler to implement and maintain.

Instead, I would advise you to flesh out your proposal so that anyone can understand the idea and its potential benefits, and developers passing by should also be able to assess its feasibility without needing to conduct extra research.

Start by describing the current need:

  • What’s lacking in Blender? For example, your main focus seem to be about GUI discoverability. Where exactly? Do you have precise examples?
  • How are current solutions falling short?
Blender should have a command panel where a user should type any kind of button that he needs and an AI tool that can translate a description of an operation into a set of commands that can be typed into the panel.
You mention a "command panel", we have an Operator Search , does it not fulfil the need, and how so?
What do you mean exactly by this AI tool? It's unclear to me what it does beyond translating.
  • What’s the impact? Highlight how the current limitations affects the users with concrete simple examples.

Then, outline potential solutions:

  • What feature(s) could solve these specific problems? What it is, what it does, how...
  • Why is it better? Compare the proposed feature to Blender’s current tools, explaining how it would improve usability or outcomes.
  • Integration and usability: Suggest how this could fit into Blender’s existing interface and workflows.
  • Mockups or examples: If possible, create a visual example of how this could look and work in Blender.

I think this can be done with an Addon without changing the hole UI (which I love btw hehe)

I agree this could be a huge timesaver and something that speeds up the learning curve for the software. quite often I use a function every so often and when I need to perform I spend far to long searching for where the button is when I could just type into a search bar inside the program not unlike how modifier search works now
