Revitalizing Blender’s Motion Tracker – Multi-Cam Solving, Dynamic Keying, and More

As someone with nearly 20 years in stop-motion animation, motion control, and VFX integration, I’ve relied on motion tracking extensively. Blender’s motion tracker is powerful, but it has seen little development in recent years, and I believe there’s huge potential for improvements that would bring it in line with industry needs.

Here are some key areas where Blender’s Motion Tracking could evolve:

1️⃣ Multi-Camera Solve • The ability to solve multiple camera angles simultaneously for better reconstruction of 3D environments. • Essential for virtual production, stereo tracking, and complex scene integration.

2️⃣ Better Keying Control – Live Dynamic Keying • Instead of requiring rendered plates, introduce real-time background keying that dynamically adjusts during tracking. • Use Case: This would be game-changing for on-set tracking, where real-time chroma keying improves accuracy before final VFX compositing.

3️⃣ Enhanced Tracking Markers & Editing Tools • Custom marker types with improved auto-detection and adaptive tracking for motion-blurred or occluded points. • Better timeline-based tracking editing for smoother workflows (similar to how Nuke handles tracked point revisions).

4️⃣ Lens Distortion Calculation from Checkerboard Patterns • A robust built-in calibration tool that directly calculates lens distortion from checkerboard grids instead of relying on external software. • Would improve tracking accuracy by allowing users to measure actual lens warping and apply it before solving the track.

Why Now?

Blender’s motion tracker hasn’t seen major updates recently, yet matchmoving and camera solving are crucial in modern VFX workflows. With growing interest in virtual production, AI-assisted tracking, and high-end compositing, Blender has a chance to become a real industry alternative to PFTrack, 3DEqualizer, and Syntheyes.

I’d love to gather feedback from the community and discuss ways we can push Blender’s tracking tools forward. Let’s make this happen!
