Raycast selection
Having to toggle to X-ray or wireframe mode just to select back facing polys/edges/points is a very poor workflow. We need a default way of selecting back facing polygons without having to switch visibility modes. In Modo we have this as default. Right click and drag gives you a lasso which just selects front facing polys. Middle Mouse button and drag gives you front and backfacing polys. No need to switch viewport draw modes. It was also done in XSI as well. This is also done in Blender by the excellent addon Modo2Blender keymap which sort of fakes the functionality by temporarily toggling you into xray mode whenever you have your middle mouse button held down. Here's a "ruined" task... developer.blender.org/T73479
* @TheRedWaxPolice * LOL yeah ruined as hell. The amount of stupidity on that thread is astonishing.
This is a very simple feature that all 3d dcc apps have, and was very well submitted from the start developer.blender.org/D6322 . And then out of nowhere, people came talking nonsense and ruined everything.
That's amazing. DAMMIT!
* @TheRedWaxPolice * Yeah exactly. This shouldn't be that hard to do, especially considering that this thread is counting to at least 4 addons that are able to do it.
* @Steve *
I checked, and i agree with Campbell. It is better to see, what you are selecting, and if not, you can ruin you work with mistakes.
It is not hard to implement, but it is wrong way, to gues, what you are selecting, except very simple cases. As option it is nice. As default it is not.
* @ Vyacheslav * With the addon I use, you can see what you are selecting because as soon as you draw a lasso, you are toggled into Xray mode where you can see the backfacing components. Also in a lot of cases, and if you're selecting in a ortho view, its easy to know what you are selecting.
As I said, this is default in Modo and it was also done in XSI. Other apps have their own ways of selecting backfacing polygons without having to revert to wireframe mode or some other mode where you can see through the mesh.

* @ xan2622 * Yeah I already use the Modo2Blender keymap addon which does it. This imo should be a native feature that I don't have to worry about an addon not working in future releases.
* @ xan2622 * auto x-ray is best solution IMO, But it will be better, if it will xray only current mesh.
Here is the solution proposal that allow to add such functionality in a single button. Check the summarizing post. developer.blender.org/T73479
