Multires Modifier hold mesh edit data Just like It holds Sculpt data
I seen a feature request that has above 100 vote count called "Edit poly" modifier. This is the single reason why the 3ds max user don't switch to blender modelling because it allows to make Large medium and small detail in non destructive manner. However blender also has similar thing that is Multires modifier but it only hold Sculpt data then why not implement it to hold edited mesh data just like the shape key so that if we have to go back to previous mesh we can just delete the multires modifier. Another interesting feature of multires "Apply base" which deform the mesh which can be used to edit further.
If not possible then an option to use shape key to further editing

It is a very different thing, Multires modifier can't be used like that, and I don't see any simple way in which it could be made to be used like that.
* @Janne Joensuu * It is just like u tweak the mesh data using sculpting but i am also aware that multires don't work if i use dynotopo that means no new vertices can be added but that can be solved by combining Shape key + Multiress algorithm.
Very different kind of data. It may become possible after more progress on geometry nodes.
