Rename “Blackbody” to “Color temperature”

Rename “Blackbody” to “Color temperature”

Why it important? Blackbody - is physics term, not everybody knows it. Color temperature - used everywhere, from photography in white balance to lamp packages.

If you don't know what “Blackbody” is, write in comments, what do you think “Blackbody” means?

Yes, and finally bring the node into "Color" category

And I might add that "Blackbody" is a theorical object used in physics sciences. While the blackbody node in Blender is only a color temperature output, which is one thing among others with black bodies theories. Not the black body itself.

And "color temperature" is pretty mutch self explanatory.

And the value label should be "Kelvin" or "K" :P

* @-L0Lock- * If working without distance units, is the colour temperature currently accurate enough in 2.8 to calibrate it to K (Or is it just a guide at he moment)?

Lauloque

* @ammusionist * AFAIK it's not related to distance. Color temperature in Kelvins just refers to which radiation is emitted depending to an absolute temperature in Kelvin. By heating a blackbody to said Kelvin temperature.

The question is if the values of the blackbody node correspond to the right range of radiations depending of the corresponding Kelvin values.
And must be taken into account that what we see in Blender depends of the color management.

So if we give it a try:
Let's create a scene with a reference temperature range (I just googled that) and create materials representing each thousand of Kelvin. And vary the gamma in order to "see" the result more correctly:

So to me, the values of the blackbody give colors which correspond to the right colors supposed to be obtained with the Kelvin values.

Here's something to keep in mind:

What is the difference between the black body and the reconstituted daylight spectrum?

TL;DR: Blackbody and Temperature are only the same below 5000K. At least for earthlings.

While the difference is not huge, the name of the node should still correspond to the underlying math. So, rather than just renaming the node, it could become a Blackbody/Color Temperature node with either two sockets, or a switch to change the mode. (Which changes the math, i.e. the output color)

Color temperature, to me, means the balance of warm/cool colors in an image. Blackbody is the right name for the node. One of the things I love about Blender is that it calls things what they actually are rather than some "artist friendly" term someone cooked up with the assumption that artists are too dumb to learn their own tools.

except this isn't what a black body is.

* @-L0Lock- * I think it refers to blackbody radiation, not blackbodies themselves. I might be wrong! In which case make the name more accurate.

Yep, colour temperature does make more sense from an artistic perspective.

Add colour ramp to it. To shows the what colour it holds on given value
