add closest to mouse to 'which part to snap onto the target' dropdown

in object mode, snap one object to another, using the nearest vertex to the mouse cursor at the time of pressing G is used as the moving object’s snapping point.

Like in 3ds max:

If normal snapping is enabled, this could be calculated from the vertex normal, or from the vertex to the centroid of the moving object.

This would also speed things up in edit mode. Select a bunch of vertices, then temporarily set the pivot to the location of the vertex closest to the mouse cursor when G was pressed. Select constraint axis as usual, and just drag snap them all.

This would also be good for draging edges and vertices around in edit mode. You could select an axis constraint in the usual way, but then the vertex or edge that was nearest to the mouse cursor at the time of pressing G would be used as the moving elements snap point.

This is basically how 3ds max works.

It saves selecting a vertex, pressing shift +S, choosing cursor to selection, then selecting the edges/vertices you want to move, choosing S for scale, pressing either x,y,z as the constraint, pressing 0 to align.

It would just be a case of select what you want, press G with your mouse nearest the vertex you want to be the temporary origin, choose the axis constraint, and then dragging to the target vertex/edge.

Isn't that what the target setting is all about?

@loic.dautry:

That's to set what part of the target object the moving object snaps onto. I'm talking about choosing which part of the moving object snaps onto the selected element of the target.

Lauloque

With the setting I screenshotted, the moving object snaps from its vertices to the target object's vertices.

However, maybe it would be nice to separate the origin object and the target object options.

Hi, I'm trying this in object mode, but it there doesnt seem to be a way to move an object and select which of the moving objects vertices will be used to snap to the target vertex.

Am I missing something?

Lauloque

There is, it's "the closest". The issue is that nobody knows "the closest from what to what". x)

Maybe it's detailed in the docs...

Heres a video. I'm trying to move the top object so that the vertex nearest to the mouse when I press G is the one used as the moving objects snap point.

Weird... That doesn't seem to be a normal behavior to me. Maybe a bug, or a huge need for improvement...

Aside form the fact it's snaping on an non-existing point (baybe it's snapping on the bounding box instead ?), It looks like "the closest" refers to "the closest point from the target object". Its nice to know, but it doesn't let the user to choos wich vertex is used from the moved object for snapping.

Maybe a good way to fix this would be to determine the origin of snapping by "the closet to mouse cursor when calling the snap".

That's what this feature request asked for (I should probably have just titled it, "add closest to mouse to 'which part to snap onto the target' dropdown" :

in object mode, snap one object to another, but rather than the centroid of the moving object being used, instead the nearest vertex to the mouse cursor at the time of pressing G is used as the moving object’s snapping point.

Lauloque

Maybe don't mention centroid, because that's another setting than vertex snapping.

@loic.dautry:

good idea.

Is there a workaround to this problem?

no idea
