Texture painting branch ?

Blender texture painting is one of the weakest feature of blender, its subpar compared to substance/equivalent. Texture painting needs love too !

As it stands, this doesn't really qualify as a feature proposal. You've said that you think texture painting needs love. That's great. Now, be specific. What specific feature are you proposing to add to Blender? Include mock-up images that show what the feature would look like in Blender's interface and describe the workflow a user would use.

If you have multiple feature suggestions for painting, make multiple proposals... but be very specific in all of them.

* @Jason van Gumster * You are an active and experienced user. Do you have any suggestions about what could be improved in the texture painting mode.

* @Zuzu der Negger * I'm sure I could come up with a few. :D That's not the point, though. RCS isn't a place where you post a problem to start a discussion. It's a place where people post specific proposals on features they'd like to have.

* @Jason van Gumster * Sure, I was just curios.

one of the main problem with texture painting in blender is how confusing and impractical the the general workflow is. Little things like unable to multiple select object for painting (you can only select one object at a time), unable to paint on multiple layers, lack of library, and layering support

on the most basic of things, the painter works, but working on a more complex object start to becoming a crutch, like having to move back and forth between workspaces to adjust layers manually is a pain

to start of small, maybe a more streamlined version of the UI ? to help texture painting a little more practical and bareable

Armour paint is a good project to follow. It's pretty good and it's open source. It's kind of confusing to build it, though.

It's partially based on Blender's code, from what I understand, but it wouldn't be possible to just merge it with Blender.

I agree with the general statement but as others said before me, it'd be nice to see some specific examples which would improve usability.

Apart from UDIMs and performance I think good improvements would be a user friendly streamlined way of multi map painting (diffuse, spec, normal at the same time), general layer management with groups and masks, color space management for textures or projection painting. Things that you can do as it is, there's just no easy way if doing it with one or a few clicks.

Perhaps a couple of gif's showing some nice substance or mari features would help. There is a module for texture painting improvements which could be populated with specific to-do tasks in the nice to have category.

* @3dddan * Rather than images from other applications, I would personally much rather see mock-ups of how it might work in Blender's interface. That's much more helpful for discussion and eventual implementation by a developer.
