Muscle Simulation - VIPER: Volume Invariant Position-based Elastic Rods

Just making the community aware of this interesting muscle simulation that was recently featured on the "Two Minute Papers" YouTube channel. Source code on GitHub, "Apache License, Version 2". That implementation requires CUDA 10.x, perhaps it can be ported to OpenGL or other.

Perhaps this could be a new object type!

this would be amazing! <3

This seems like it could be implemented into Bendy Bones (at least on a UI level), as while I don't know much about the tech, it seems like you could set up something that looked like a bendy bone that would squash and deform instead of bending (or both)

We need this! It looks amazing!

The real-time aspect isn't so important to me, as I don't have an NVIDIA GPU and mostly render at the command line, but the functionality and "realism" is appealing.

<3 Nice one.. just wow.. <3

The difficulty that I foresee is -- creating a depsgraph that can pipe data to the GPU and back without creating lag and load time. When everything runs on the GPU that's fine... but unless the entire modifier stack can be GPU accelerated there will need to be some back-and-forth. And Everything Nodes isn't gonna happen on GPU anytime soon, if ever. Not even the Houdini people are trying that yet!

* @Josephbburg * Even if it's not GPU based, having similar tools would be a lot better than not having them

I would love to see this implemented. Recently watched someone's process of making CGI animals, from the skeleton to muscles to skin for beautiful realistic animation. Kinda jealous, and I already have a skeleton, and muscle groups I could use for my own model. Just need an easy system to put it together in the same way. :O

Is there a software that resembles this? Apart Ziva I hoped houdini had some tools. But if they are in 19 shuarly they are litle documented and slow

Oh this is very cool. We'd better get onto porting it, before some greedy person does it and start selling it to us. haha :D

Not sure if the Apache license would mesh well with blender. Blender has it's own Apache license with cycles, however it's within blender.

I could be wrong though..

Josephbburg

* @Rodger Davis * Right from the horse's mouth: apache.org/licenses/GPL-compatibility.html

Apache Software can be released as GPLv3 (because it only adds new copy-left restrictions), but NOT the other way around (attempting to release GPLv3 software as Apache would remove copyleft restrictions and thus violate the GPL).

Now, Blender's own source is licensed under GPLv2 or later ; and parts of the library code are various other permissive free licenses. Cycles is, of course, Apache. All of them together are only compatible as GPLv3 (this is already true), so I don't think there would be any problem adding a library that has Apache licensed-code. ( source )

* @Josephbburg * Nice! As long as the license can work, then awesome.
