Add "recursion depth" parameter to Realize Instances geometry node

It's possible - and useful - to make nested instances in Blender - up to 8 layers deep. For example, you might make 100 instances of a tree, each of which has 100 instanced leaves.

( docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/modeling/geometry_nodes/instances.html )

In geometry nodes it's possible to:

  • Increase nesting by 1 level (using Geometry To Instance node or Collection Info node) and
  • Completely unnest all layers of instances (with the Realize Instances node).

However it's not currently possible to:

  • un-nest just 1 level, for example to get to the 100 instanced leaves of the tree
  • un-nest a set number of levels, e.g. you know you want to go 3 levels up without flattening everything

Could this option be exposed on the Realize Instances node? Either as a simple "recursive" toggle, or with an integer "recursion depth" parameter?

Would be very useful in certain situations - especially when dealing with the Collection info node!

Should be marked as done.

Hi, there's actually a task and mockup for that here: projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/92744
