Flexible filename increment sensing / alphabetic increment versioning/ increment templates
Practices vary but I increment my file names with the date (YYMMDD) plus a letter, eg "TruckBody200511a". For any given day that gives me 26 versions names, more if I emigrate to Russia!
This is truly first-world stuff, but it'd be swell if Blender optionally detected the final character in a file name and incremented the filename alphabetically if it were a letter.
There's too much variation in date presentation to ask for this only after a date, but like I said, it'd be nice. Perhaps the proper way to go is to have a template that is optionally defined in Preferences, so as to please every shop's practice.
(I use a numerically incrementing addon , but sadly it doesn't detect leading zeros, so it's a bit awkward.)

You can do it with oscurart tools addon. Enable in user preferences. Then, hit W and go to oscurart tools - save incremental backup.
* @Eugenio Pignataro * The dox seem to be missing from the plugin and are not obvious on the website, and in the Blender manual "Save Incremental" is tagged with "ToDo".
* @jeric_synergy * You must enable oscurart tools, I made this tool. Have you the last build?
_v01 _v02 _v03, it's the industry standard.
