Project primitive
Project primitive is one of the best techniques invented for sculpting/poly modeling. One of its best features is the way it allows you to bridge the primitive with the base mesh allowing you to get transitions similar to NURBS modeling. although it's completely different than NURBS modeling
It basically allows you to model nearly anything extremely fast.

FYI- there's an addon called Simply Concept that does this with Blender's existing toolset. It's effectively doing the same thing as zbrush under the hood- meshes being voxelized int a single unified mesh non-destructively: youtube.com/watch
This feature set is much different than the youtube video for the add-on IMO, mostly because you can set the transition tolerance, plus this feature also makes face sets (where an additional primitive is laid down) which is very important.
Theres also some functionality dealing with flattening the primitive or subtracting or something. I just remember being able to get results the fastest with this method for many hard surface tasks.
how is it different from meta balls?
It differs from metaballs in that objects with a centerpoint outside of the projection surface are smoothly removed from the projection surface. So to make a boolean comparison, metaballs can only union to one another while this method allows for subtraction as well.
Cool idea, also I don't know if the blender team would appreciate zbrush imagery being shared here. I think there are concerns about posting copyrighted material (which can apparently include screenshots of software? I dunno)
