You mean this? But use pie menus if you can. They're so much faster.

TAB > Toggles between "Object Mode" and "Edit Mode".
Ctrl+TAB > Brings up a pie menu to quickly choose any mode.
You actually don't even need to click when using pie menus.
• Hold Ctrl+TAB
• Move mouse towards your desired function
• Release Ctrl+TAB

Here's the video. I figured out how to upload it. The emphises is on the 'Edit Mode' then back to the previous mode for the toggle. 'Edit Mode' is used so often, why not have an easy toggle button without going through pull-downs and pies. Accessed with one hand. Being considerate of the beginners.

Could be a toggle between current and most recent mode, I think that would be easiest.

* That's similar to the behavior of the
tab
key if you don't have Pie Menus enabled, it switches between edit mode and the most recent other mode. But I know you want a button onscreen!

It's not exactly clear here what you're suggesting. Could you provide an image that shows what you'd like to see?

@Jason van Gumster
* I wish I could but I'm using my phone right now. But just as you have the overlay button that toggles between functions along with the pull down menu, object and edit mode could be the same even with the text on the side. I will provide an image as soon as I get back to my PC later today.

Object and Edit do have a "overlay-type button". It's located in the top left had corner like Josephbburg shows in his response. Is this what you mean?
