Ergonomics of use. Don't ruin what already works well please.

"Changed for better understanding"

  1. Weight paint mode - "Smooth" option and it's default values. differences in 2.93 and 3.3:

123.jpg 111.jpg

And you can not choose default option, even if you switch it in weight paint mode on "Active group" and save startup file after that, it is still will be "Deform pose bones" by default, which is sucks. And again i can not see any reasons to change this option like that. This is just stupid, it's just beyond any logic.

When im working with one vertex group, obviously i want to smooth only that vertex group right? I don't want to smooth all of them, when im using "Smooth" option. If i will need to do that for all of the groups i will chose that manually, not need to force me to do that like that. But devs decided to change it for some reason in new builds.

  1. Solved but still questionable thing:

<Changed just "Selection" tool on "Toggle" and it's working good now. So what the reason was to add not needed double-click option to de-select? It's just useless and have no sense in general. Devs just forcing you to do additional movements, when it's absolutley not necessarry. It's working good just with toggle like it was before>

  1. Here is image where i showed everything about new "Snap" option:

Please bring back "List" type of menu as it was in 2.93 and other old builds. I don't want to use Pie menu for it, because it's counter-productive and wasting my time on Aiming needed option and moving mouse in different directions through almost half of the monitor on my laptop, while in old version you just pressing shortcut and doing short fast movement only in one direction(down) to needed option in list and click on it. It's already in muscle memory and works automatically, so it's sign of perfect solution, productive mostly important. Numbers is not very usefull, because you need to move your hand from your main spot where is all main hotkeys. If this is a single task, then this is not a problem, but wen you need to put vertexes manually according to reference on background and reference mesh, so you need to repeat this tens and hundereds times(Example: select reference point - cursor to selected - select working point - selected to cursor) and if old menu "It's already in muscle memory and works automatically" and very fast, but with pie menu it's wasting of time with aiming or using numbers, and just a suffer in general for everyone who is using. 22222.jpg

And just will tell in advance you can not put anything in that "Name" window if you choosing old "wm.call_menu", so devs erased it for some reason. You all can try to reproduce it by yourself, so you will see it. Also when you choosing old "wm.call_menu" it changes it's name from "Snap" to "Call menu", so you loosing "Snap" in general.

From what i understand You have problems with:

  1. Weight Paint - Smooth tool - used to work on active group, but now worked on all groups.
  2. Select was toggle, now its two clicks.
  3. Some shortcut used to be a menu list, but now its pie menu

ad. 1

Honestly i dont know whats the problem is. Ive tested several versions and all seems to work the same way (even 2.79). Maybe You have "Auto-Normalize" option enabled, or i'm looking at wrong option?

ad. 2 Just change it back if You prefer othey way: https://i.imgur.com/0iFml7g.png ad 3. same as 2, In blender You can make shortcut to almost any menu and option Just change that hotkey to old option in keymap editor.

  1. Nope, you looked in wrong place, i talking about "Smooth" option and it's default values., not anything else. Here is it: Can't use imgur embedding in my region so here is screenshots of differences in 2.93 and 3.3: drive.google.com/file/d/1dAMYHpq0blOYuvXYT6jI5xOivj-SckB9/view

  1. Oh, Yea, now i get it.

I have no idea why its set this way, i also think this is stupid option to be default.

Anyway here is two workarounds for You:

  • make shortcut for it

  1. locate weight pain mode in keymap editor
  2. add new key field
  3. set idientifier to "object.vertex_group_smooth"
  4. set key that You like
  5. set default subset to Active group
  6. remember to save settings if you dont have preferences auto save

or

Use "addon" that i've made for You : »download link«

install just as any other addon

  1. Its changed to [A] as select and [Alt+A] as de-select. And i do like that change despite it was annoying at first. There is no longer 4+ times clicking on [A] to be sure that nothing is selected.

Also there is also easy option in preferences to change to old way

  1. This menu is called "VIEW3D_MT_snap"

Thank you very much for the addon, it's very useful) Here is interesting thing with Snap. if u rename it with "wm.call_menu" it's renaming "Snap" in to call_menu and that's it, looks like nothing i can do about it in 3.3.1. When im changing it, it makes "name" tab grey, like you can not click on it, but! if you still will click on it and put "VIEW3D_MT_snap" in to it, you will get back old "list" type menu! Like WTF! I have no damn clue what the hell they did with that lol! Thanks for the help. Now i have my old good stuff back and can work peacfully)

The first word of this proposal is "ergonomics", but it's followed by a wall of unorganized and non-aerated text that is the exact opposite of ergonomic.

And there are always people who are trying to be smart, getting to the smallest detail, missing the essence sense of this very "unorganized and non-aerated text". English is not my native language. I hope you feel better after your misplaced rebuke. Good day to you.

zuorion

Let me put that in this way:

You did not best job of convincing someone that your idea is good because you wrote it in hard to read way. Think about it. If you wanna convince someone do anything you wanna sell it to him in best and easiest to understand way (and that does not apply to Blender but in general).

There are about 10 proposal every day. If someone had to read in their spare time through wall of text just to know what are they talking about it wouldn't be most pleasant experience.

L0Lock, me, and few other users and even developers do read them all voluntarily just to improve blender experience for us and other users.

Often proposal it's just valid, other time author of post didn't think something through and there idea would be buggy so we add additional questions or explain to OP why this solution wouldn't work in our opinion, and quite often its just user side error or he didn't knew about some option, and there are even times that it was just a bug.

"English is not my native language" Neither do me. But your English is understandable, at least for me. Its just that wall of text is really hard to read and unpleasant experience.

There are few advice of how to write proposal in better way:

If You have few ideas or complains make them as list, eg.

  1. Problem A because of XXX
  2. Problem B because of XXX
  3. Problem C because of XXX

Thats why i think previous solutions was better so the shouldn't be changed

If someone like developer already know about problems A and B, he dont have to read through all just to know about problem C.

And its just easier to address them in comments like "You can solve 2. by doing this »x«"

When you write "previous version" or "current version" its best to write that version down eg.

in previous version (2.93) it worked better than in current version (3.3) because of XXX

Because there are 3 active versions (2.93 LTS, 3.3 LTS, 3.4) and if have to check something in that previous version i would have to guess.

And lastly don't write pissed off. I do get also angry when some change wasted hours of my work, but writing something that wont convince anyone wont change anything.

Many people here do not speak English natively, including me. A wall of text is and will always be a challenge, even in someone's native language.

I am pointing out that your proposal is unclear and hard to read. That is neither "the smallest detail" nor a "misplaced rebuke" and definitely not an attempt to be smart. Just the simple reality of communication.

It's your proposal, so do whatever you want. But how do you expect a decent amount of people to endorse your proposal if it's hard to even read it through?
