Ability to edit linked materials from scene where they are used

Currently if you link a model from another .blend file into your current .blend file, all the material settings are grayed out. It would be nice if I could use these settings in the current .blend file to tweak the original.

This should be possible once they implement overrides. I thought this might be a 2.81 feature, but I'm not sure where on the roadmap it is.

How would you indicate whether or not your changes should affect the original file?

I can't see this not causing a lot of problems for people who use an asset in multiple projects of multiple years. You change the color for one project then you need to revisit an older project and re-render a larger image overnight and you wake up to find the color of that 1 asset is wrong and you wasted all that render time and have to do it again.

You can tweak un-greying the material/datablock. But the original will be left untouched, you know
