Cycles - Rendered Mode
Whilst in 'Rendered' mode, would it be possible to allow the movement around the viewport, whilst looking at 'Preview Material' mode until the mouse button is released and then 'Rendered' mode takes over?

Sorry if I'm misinterpreting this, but that's already possible with the Node Wrangler add-on. Are you suggesting a hold/toggle button for the Node Wrangler preview feature?
As an example.
In Blender you open up the Barbershop demo scene.
In the 3D Viewport (Top Right/Bottom Right) you have the Viewport shading modes (Wireframe, Solid, Material Preview and Rendered).
If you are in any of the first three then moving around the scene using the mouse, is generally a good experience.
If you select the Rendered mode for the Barbershop scene, then moving around thr scene is somewhat laggy. If, this 'Rendered' mode offered the choice of using the Solid/Material mode for panning, moving and zooming) within in, then would not the experience be better.
In this case, once the mouse buttons had been released the Rendered mode could resume.
Oh, I see.
Some of the lag can be accounted for with the the correct settings: no denoising, low-ish sample count, gpu rendering...etc. Your specs are gonna play the biggest role.
