this should be considered a bug tbh

It says it right there on the tin, extrude along normals. This is simply a different operation than extrude.

along normals of what, the average normals of the verts? This is a bug.
You can try with all the extrude tools, without workarounds its not possible

Try using Mesh Tools instead: Offset Edges / Extrude, i think you'll get a happier result.

I'm aware of that, but it's still an addon.. This should work properly out of the box like every other 3d app.

suggesting addons as a solution for a core issue is kinda weird lol

Normally I would agree, but the addon is an optional that comes preinstalled in Blender.

Cycles is an addon too. thorn's suggestion is a built-in addon, which means Blender has commited to maintaining it. Unless the offset edges is not adequate for this task, I don't see why it isn't a solution.

the solution would be to fix the extrude tool. Having two tools doing almost the same thing is not a solution, its a workaround

thats the thing, core features are not meant to be optional. it should work as expected from the start. this is a bug

So convince the developers to make the add-on install automatically, as other add-ons already do, instead of asking the user to click a checkbox. Problem solved.

You need to press alt while extruding to even thickness
