Black and white Intersection Texture

view.genial.ly/5e8e6c27602d4b0e262b6369/interactive-content-untitled-genially

It would be nice if the texture could be formed based on the shape of another object.

For example, if you have a plane and you need to make a simple pattern on it. You can resort to creating a texture with a certain resolution and make a uv unwrap, but the disadvantage of this method is that texture quality depends on the texture resolution. Also creating and editing this pattern using the object should be easier than if you had to redraw it every time.

But I would like to clarify that the disadvantage of this method is that the quality of the black and white texture will depends on the quality of the mesh, like boolean.

I decided to add this parameter to the Texture coordinate node, but it might be better to add a special node for this, which would contain more than one object. It would be called Black and white Intersection Node

This effect is easy to do in Cycles using a trick: the shader is switched within an intersection with any transparent object. {attachment intersection} (I was quite surprised to find that there is no "Equals" node)

* @emu * great thank you very much!! could you show what's inside the not equal group-node ? :)

* @lucaspedrajas * something like (a < b) + (a > b): {attachment not_equal} EDIT: sorry, I realized the correct operation is "modulo 2", like this: {attachment modulo2}

I tried to do this by assigning transparent to sphere and assigning this material to a cube, and it work. It would be cool if a similar thing could be done in eevee{attachment __22png}

I believe this would be very useful for non destructive masks for texturing and I was looking for this several months ago, it seems it would need to be raytraced like ambient oclusion. My wishes are to be able to work in texturing like in adobe ilustrator or any vector based software where your strokes are not destructive you can tweak the curves whenever you want ,, for texturing everything is raster based, I feel like something is missing in that workflow, Simon thommes was experimenting with this so it's in fact possible.

I hope the debelopers see this as an oportunity to innovate in the texture painting world

he might be working on an add-on to do it so .. great news! :) twitter.com/simonthommes/status/1158107680667516928

This is roughly what I had in mind, but only without the boolean difference effect. I think for my example, boolean slice will be more suitable.

zuorion

* @Alexei * Oh, i see.

it is possible via booleans

if you would like to have it done on shader it would have terrible performance

XZS Author

* @Pawel Piotrowski * If it will have terrible performance using a Shader, then you can do it via a boolean. The main idea is that the texture can be formed based on the shape of another object.

* @Pawel Piotrowski * How did you do this? Сan I do the same using the built in blender functions?

zuorion

* @Alexei * Yes, and i;ve also used vertex color to differentiate look in single material (one monkey is white other is black in vcol)
