Add go-to-object buttons to referenced objects and highlight them when mouse overed
A. goto buttons
Pressing this his go-to button selects that object. For example take an array modifier. That modifier can have bezier curve as its guide (fit type: fit curve) (object follows that bezier). If you want to go from editing that arrayed object to editing the bezier curve you need to manually find that bezier object in your scene.
What about adding a small [->] icon in to the array modifier in the target object slot that takes you to that other object? By take to another object I just mean select it. This makes it much easier, faster and efficient to go to that object to edit it. So if your bezier object reference is Bezier.001 it would read like this instead with that small icon button there: [->] Bezier.001
This same thing should be used for all object reference slots in the ui. Modifiers, particles, parents, constraints... Whenever there is an object reference slot you should be able to just press that button and go to that object. If the target object is on layer/collection that is not visible then just make that icon grey but still clickable.
The problem here is how to get quickly back to the original object from the bezier/object reference after pressing that button? Blender does not have "back"-buttons. I don't have a good solution for this but I still think having those go-to buttons for the object reference slots in the ui would be great. This go-to button makes it much quicker to move between objects when you can move between the objects with just one click instead of manually searching the object so it does speed up the editing process.
B. Mouse over highlights for these object reference slots (+some other things)
So take that same array modifier that has a bezier curve as fit type: fit curve object reference. The bezier should be highlighted in the 3d view as you hover your mouse over that bezier curve object slot. By highlight I mean an edge glow or outline color change or some other effect that simply shows the object on the 3d view as a highlighted object (even if it is in different layer or collection). After you move your mouse away from the slot the highlighting of course disappears.
This highlighting makes it quick to check your object references are correct (right object selected for example) and it also allows you to quickly check the object reference shape without having to go back and forth between the two objects. This is great for modifiers as you can easily check which objects are used, how they look and see if there are any errors.
This should be used for all object references in modifiers, for vertex groups, vertex colors, in the outliner (hover over and object and it is highlighted in 3d view), camera selection in scene editor. Any time you have a reference to some object or data that can be highlighted on 3d viewport it should be highlighted when mouse hovers over it. For vertex groups this would be AMAZING if you have lots of them as you can quickly check them (check modifier vert group for example).
I am not suggesting that objects should be highlighted in the 3d viewport if you mouse over an object in the 3d viewport but I think that is another use for this as well?
