Volume drawing

In Windows 10's Paint 3D there's a freeform 2D drawing mode that results in a 3D form that has proportionally more volume where the shape is larger. So small protrusions in the 2D shape become thin protrusions in the 3D result.

I really like how fast you can create basic 3D shapes that are usable for further sculpting with this method. Looking at the resulting topology, I suspect the 3D result is shaped using smoothed voxels, similar to Dynamesh or OpenVDB.

Being able to start such a drawing mode with the touch of a button or keyboard shortcut, you could very easily create the base shapes of body parts and other organic forms. Additionally, there's a drawing mode that results in straight extrusions, for flat hard-surface objects.

Here's a video showing some fast object creation using Paint 3D's 2D to 3D drawing method.

It would be great to have a similar easy-to-use tool in Blender, preferably also usable in Sculpt Mode, maybe using the lasso tool that's used for masking.

Thanks.

You can make your own script. Crease pencil->curve->face->solidify->stack of modifiers for smoothing. I develop one. {attachment 200313jpg}

* @ Vyacheslav * Nice! Would you like to share the script? I'm a total scripting nitwit.

* @ Vyacheslav * The only difference with the Paint 3D tool is that small areas in the 2D drawing are thin in the 3D result. It's not a straight extrusion and smoothing.

* @Metin Seven * find another way. curves work nice. {attachment 230355jpg}

* @Metin Seven * later. It is still raw and, perhaps, bugged.

* @ Vyacheslav * That's a nice option indeed, just like the Skin modifier on mesh edges. But the thing is to be able to create it as quickly and easily as possible. That's why I'd love to see a way of quickly drawing a shape that gets proportional volume derived from the shape.

It would be great to get more of this kind of workflow in Blender. We probably don't want it as automatic and hidden from the user as MSP 3d cause Blender users need quite a bit more adjust-ability. I don't think we saw any signs of topology in that whole video pretty amazing for artists who want to stay away from the technical side and hope for the best.

It's like a super simplified/limited version of Zbrush Extract tool when he's creating mesh from the masks he's drawing on the mesh. A lot of possibilities will open up when B3d develops tools that allow fluid topo and automatic retopolo.

Also metaspheres are very good for sculpt prototyping.

Just to be clear, you don't mean shadowbox correct? I feel SB can be better than this proposed feature in some cases.

* @Karric * Shadowbox results in a simple extrusion unless you also draw a mask on other sides, but then it becomes too elaborate. Paint 3D simply builds a (probably voxel-generated) volume from a drawn 2D shape, where smaller parts become thinner parts in the resulting mesh. So it's more than just an extrusion. You can try it for yourself if you've got a Windows 10 system. Paint 3D is a free, pre-installed part of it.
