Vector Shapes Strip for Sequencer
I propose a special strip for the sequencer that:
- allows the creation of vector shapes directly in the sequencer
- the vector shapes are bound to the strip and can be moved around the timeline
- the vector shapes should be animatable
- it is basically a strip version of the mask editor (in the video clip editor)
-
shows a strip-specific toolbar if selected in video preview windows. The toolbar could contain:
- Vector Path manipulation tools
- premade shapes like Circle, Square, Star ... the usual
- Use those vector shape strips directly as masks
- Use the strips as any kind of decorative elements (Color them via masking a color strip)
It would make working with masks a bit more like in Premiere and in general a lot easier and faster.

Masking directly in the VSE is indeed more intuitive, however a node will be automatically created also, so you're both right.
Currently, what you're proposing (or something very similar) is being worked on as part of the Google Summer of Code.

use node !
I Think masking in frame is more intuitive .
