VR : Eevee EquiRectangular / Cycles EquiAngular Cubemap (google)

I am currently working on 360 productions, and there are a couple of things that would greatly improve render times / workflow.

First of all, Youtube (Google) has been using its own EquiAngular cubemaps (EAC) for its 360 videos for a while. It has the benefit of being more optimized regarding pixel count vs distortion. see : blog.google/products/google-vr/bringing-pixels-front-and-center-vr-video/ Having this option available at render time would mean one less post-render conversion and better quality upon upload. The conversion (equirectangular to EAC) is not yet available in After Effects, but my company made a plugin for this purpose, we can be contacted by developpers if help is needed to port this to blender.

Another thing would be the ability to render VR directly with Eevee. Right now the only workaround is to render with 6 square cameras with a 90° FOV, make a cubemap out of those, convert to equirectangular, and then convert to equiangular. Quite a lot of conversion which makes the time saved by eevee's speed, lost during post conversions (and quality is lost at every step) And from my tests, I have noticed that with this technique, there are seams that are visible between the cameras, this is probably due to eevee's way of handling lights/shadows etc that are screen dependent. So in the end it might simply be impossible to use eevee this way...

I just got a change to support (EquiAngular Cubemap) EAC for Cycles rendering accepted into the 3.4 branch - currently available in nightly. developer.blender.org/D13525

Yeah, so for the 6 Cameras set up one can't use any of the screen space effects, like bloom or ambient occlusion.

This is on the work list... it just doesn't have any planned date. I'm making an entire movie to be rendered in Eevee 360º and I still don't have a camera that can actually render it XD ... but it will happen, we have to wait :)
