Sculpt Mode wishlist

Hi,

I love to work with Blender's Sculpt Mode — particularly Dyntopo — but I miss a number of features that are present in ZBrush, and thought to post them here:

• A 'Global' checkbox for the Topology Rake function, in stead of having to set the slider value for each individual brush.

• An alternate smooth brush mode that preserves volume.

• A general smoothing tool to auto-smooth a complete mesh or a masked area (in stead of having to add and apply a Smooth modifier each time).

• A general mask blur option, in stead of having to smooth the edges of each mask manually.

• Functions to expand or shrink a mask.

• Easy extraction of masked areas into a new geometry layer with a desired amount of thickness (now you need a separate add-on for that).

• The ability to manipulate unmasked parts like selections in Edit Mode: being able to move/rotate/scale those parts with a transform gizmo.

• More options to establish mask shapes, like a circular mask.

• Topological sculpting (like the Move Topological brush in ZBrush). Now you have to mask surrounding geometry each time.

• Polygon grouping and smoothing of the polygon group edges.

• A solid quad auto-retopology tool (like ZBrush ZRemesher or 3D-Coat Autopo).

• Easy cutting and separating using a custom curve or shape.

• A tool to easily Boolean all intersecting parts of the same mesh (like the Remesh by Boolean deformer in ZBrush).

• An option (checkbox) to let smoothing use Dyntopo as well, so smoothing also affects topology when that option is activated.

• A hotkey to easily reapply the last brush stroke (like the '1' key in ZBrush).

• Being able to sculpt and vertex-paint at the same time, as is possible in ZBrush. It would speed up workflow as opposed to first sculpting and then separately trying to paint exactly across the sculpted shapes. It would be particularly effective in Dyntopo mode.

• Laplacian deforming inside Sculpt Mode, like a blend of rigging and the grab brush.

— Additions from comments:

Julian Perez:

• Improved performance for high-poly sculpts, preferably approaching or equalling ZBrush performance.

• Sculpt layers (The inspiration for this should be Mudbox, not Zbrush btw).

• A way to apply a texture over the whole mesh, like the Noisemaker in zbrush. youtu.be/Puwx5rDFOHo For dyntopo specifically, it would be very good if we could have tessellation based on images; let's say I have a wrinkles texture and I want to add detail with it, right now I can't say to blender to add that detail based on the image, it can only add or remove polygons based on brush size, a constant resolution or the zoom to the object.

• Also, I'd look at addons as SpeedSculpt, Advanced Sculpting and Sculpt Toolkit to implement some of their tools natively into Blender.

The Red Wax Police:

• Add OpenVDB to Blender.

• Bring back the global brush palette.

Remosande:

• An Insert (Multi) Mesh brush and Curve Insert brush like in ZBrush, for quick insertion of meshes on the surface of your sculpt mesh.

Nice list. Let's not forget Dynamesh, in Blender that would be OpenVDB...

Oh, and bring back the global brush palette... 😉

While I agree with your list, I think the first thing that should be worked on is performance. I know that zbrush uses several tricks (with their pixols and 2.5d projections) to keep good performance on highpoly meshes, but there must be something that can be done for Blender's performance too, right?

Now, my personal wishlist would include:

  • Sculpt layers (The inspiration for this should be Mudbox, not Zbrush btw)
  • A way to apply a texture over the whole mesh, like the Noisemaker in zbrush. youtu.be/Puwx5rDFOHo
  • For dyntopo specifically, it would be very good if we could have tessellation based on images; let's say I have a wrinkles texture and I want to add detail with it, right now I can't say to blender to add that detail based on the image, it can only add or remove polygons based on brush size, a constant resolution or the zoom to the object.

@Julian Perez: I agree with you that would be the most important part. Same goes for painting. They both need some serious dedication.

@Julian Perez: maybe we could use OpenVDB to work like Pixols and 2.5d like in Zbrush

julperpub

@jamesprakashjc: Pixols are not volumes, the 2.5d stuff of Zbrush is about showing just the part of the mesh you're working on at the time, like a screenshot of the mesh that gets projected on the actual object once you finish sculpting or rotate the model. OpenVDB, as far as I understand, could help a lot with remeshing.

@Julian Perez: oh I get it, thx

How that could work? Is it too much trouble for the developers?

remosande

nice list! I do think a "Curve Brush/ Insert Mesh Brush" is much needed as well.

@remosande: Thanks! Added to the wishlist.

This should really be broken down into multiple proposals so each idea can be discussed and tracked individually.

@Jason van Gumster: On the other hand, having one complete wishlist avoids scattered wishes not being noticed by RCS readers and Blender developers. Readers can leave a comment which wish they'd like to see, and I'll add a vote counter behind each wish.

@Metin Seven: Then link this proposal to each of the individual ones (and link them back here). Right now, you're doing double the work with none of the benefits of this site... plus you're making it more difficult for anyone who wants to discuss a feature or actually implement it.

Z Brush has those neat IMM Brushes where you simply add mesh parts you made beforehand to the scene by painting them on the mesh right after you can scale those and stuff. Would be handy to have something like that within sculpt mode to quickly add premade things like teeth , scales or entire body parts to your active mesh while auto masking the rest like zbrush does.

Love the list, hopefully the devs can make the time.

I'm closing this proposal. Many suggestions from here are by now implemented. But overall I'd discourage making "Wishlist" proposals. Keep it to a singe self-contained feature idea or project. Giant feature lists are impossible to manage on this site.

fex.cg92

Any news about any of this?

MetinSeven Author

* @fex.cg92 * Not yet. I really hope the Blender devs get to see this list and will have the time and budget to implement features.

Thanks guys! I added your wishes to the list.

If you'd like to add something to the list, just leave a comment and I'll add it, along with a credit for you.

P.S.: Sorry for the lack of line breaks. When I edit the post the line feeds are OK.

P.P.S.: Ah, another line break helped. 🙂
