A simpler way of adding color to curves or line objects

Blender should have a simpler way of setting viewport colors for curves, and or objects like circle, square etc. These objects are often used as controls for animation rigs, and having add materials, wireframe modifiers and finally setting display colors is a bit of a pain.

I was hoping to see v.2.8 getting some love in this area, but so far no luck it seems.

Hi Jason,

Here's how it's done in Softimage on a Null object. This is like a 'empty object' with ways of changing/hiding the base icon, or add a second one that is completely different. The 'shadow icon' has the ability to have it's color changed as well.

So something like this in Blender added to the empty object(s) would be awesome, especially for rigging. This in addition to a basic color setting, - directly - added to a curve.

@rob: This is a good start. The next thing to do would be to make mock-ups showing how you think it would work in Blender.

@Jason van Gumster: Looking at the Blender UI, on the 'object' tab there's already a 'Viewport Display: 'Bounds' checkbox and dropdown. That is basically the 'Primary Display' in the Softimage UI. Just add some more symbol shapes. Add a second one that becomes the 'Shadow Display' and finally add a basic 'Color' slot so we can color the curve. Mockup: Image

Yes, would be great to have a faster way. Some display properties would be great for all kinds of objects with display colors and wireframe width and stuff like that.

It's not sufficient to say that things should be simpler or better. This site is for posting ideas. Show or describe specifically how you would suggest making this improvement. Just saying it's a pain isn't enough.
