Limit UV Editor texture size display to Improve Performance
I'm closing this proposal as the main point are performance issue with hires texture/image on image/uv editor, and this issue has been fixed with this patch developer.blender.org/D8234 .
While working on UV Editor with high resolution image (try 10K Square image), the uv editor become very slow and sluggish.
It would be great to have an option to limit the texture size display in the UV Editor just like the viewport texture Limit Size in the Preferences
preferably directly in the UV editor display settings
This setting basically creating an internal Lower Res Proxy texture to be displayed in the UV editor ie TextureName.Proxy.256.tga . This could improve the performance of UV Editor and Unwrapping process.
In other software they basically have this option, or just limit the UV Editor Texture Size automatically.
Unless Blender dev able to magically improve the Image Viewer Performance for high resolution texture then this idea are obsolete :)

developer.blender.org/D8234 seems fix the issue with performance. should i close this proposal?
* @reanimate * If it fixes the performance issue in an acceptable way without drawbacks (you should test the patch yourself to be sure) then yeah I'd close it.
* @Chris Kohl * Tested, and indeed the performance are improved no more lag when working with hires images and UDIMS. Closing this proposal.
I like this idea. I know features like it in other software like Nuke where there is just a general "Switch to low res," button.
In Blender I could see it as a simple drop-down in preferences called "Downsample resolution," which when a button is enabled in the header or whatever downsamples all images to the selected resolution.
