Overlapping Objects Selection Preview
Overlapping Selection Preview
If one wants to select an object from a bunch of overlapping objects, then it could be achieved by these methods:
Method 1: Hover over the object and Alt+LeftMouseClick. Blender will display a list of objects underneath the cursor to choose from. This method is not useful if the objects are not managed (named) correctly.
Method 2: Select each object from the list at a time then isolate and Unisolate each of them to preview (Using Forward Slash key in NumPad). This method gets the job done but is very tedius if the objects are too many.
Proposal:
Overlapping Selection Preview: Similar to the Method1, instead of providing a list to choose from, we can scroll the mouse wheel to cycle through each overlapping objects. (See Example GIF)
Example:
- Hover over the object to be selected
- Click Alt+LMB to activate selection cycling
- Use Scroll wheel to cycle and LMB to select

Upvoted but I'm not even sure if you would need to make the objects draw in front of each other, just the outline would be enough in most cases?
I also think improvement here is needed because blender 2.8 regressed usability cycling though overlapping objects with just clicking, I made a card about it here; Link
* @Frankie Hobbins * In most cases Yes, but if there are more no of overlapping objects and if most of them are small in size (Which is often encountered in archviz) then there is an absolute need of drawing in front of other objects during cycling.
I agree with the general idea, but not the implementation- completely hiding the object is extremely jarring, I'd rather the current behavior of just blindly guessing over that. A better idea IMO would be to simply highlight the object and allow it to draw over the top of every object, so you can see what object it is in the correct visual context.
* @testure * Absolutely agree. I just wanted to convey the idea of selection preview. The implementation can be tweaked as required
EDIT: Modified the Proposed GIF
* @fasi.eijaz * yeah, that's a lot better!
