A equivalent to Reference Editor on Blender is possible?

This may come from the workflow I'm used to working and from my time as student but I really wonder if there is a simpler way to bring other files into the scene and be able to reference other files and if update I can know I am not altering anything of the referenced file.

I know of Append and Link exist but is not quite the same advantages to somebody of the team updating on the moment some files and the other can read their file on scene and maybe refresh ti so new changes show.

If you were on a solo project well it can help lots if you are testing too but just wishful thinking if it could be possible to bring it somehow to blender?

I wish that too.

I guess an elegant way to insert that in Blender could be in a new mode in the outliner. Since there are already some form of external file manager to some extent, there could be a mode dedicated to linked files management with specific controls, like Add/Remove Link, Refresh, Replace, Make local, Make Proxy, Load/Unload, Duplicate, etc.
