Fixing geometry problems as a logical extension of "Select all by Trait" functionality
NOTE: the following proposal would resolve geometry issues like dealing with overlapping faces.
Currently, "Select all by Trait" functionality helps diagnose the current geometry state. But out of the selection of the vertices, edges or faces, there is not much more you can do with it. As currently Blender does not support storing edge selection, it is not even possible to save the current state of the problematic areas and make manual fixings of them.
On the other hand, removing the selection causes other errors like gaps and holes. Filling the selection (assuming the issues are holes, which is not always the case) creates even more problems of this kind.
This issue is very typical on 3D scanned geometry and automatically generated meshes, like the ones from Metahuman. If these issues are not corrected, there are all sorts of rendering artifacts. For example, the Random Walk Method in Subsurface Scattering makes black lines and patches all over the mesh. The modifiers do not work properly either with this kind of broken geometry.
My proposal :
- A contextual menu like "Merge" that allows for removing the unwanted geometry causing the errors.
- Including the functionality "Merge vertex by distance" as part of the correction
As a reference, the SOP Clean in Houdini makes some of these basic functionalities, and the Poly Doctor SOP adds even more elements to be repaired.
The required functionality is important to be included natively in Blender, as using external resources for this matter, like Houdini in my case, breaks apart the stored vertex groups, among many other compatibility problems.

Ever decided to press M on your keyboard while in edit mode? Also, there's a built-in addon called 3D Toolkit, which has multiple functions to report errors.
