I wouldn't have made this suggestion if certain people would have realized (after being told) that some of their suggestions are...

  • ...already being worked on
  • ...already in blender
  • ...already in an add-on and this isn't the best place to merely say "make add-on xyz a default part of core blender"
  • ...impossible to understand due to grammar and spelling
  • ...impossible to understand even with no spelling mistakes
  • ...impossible to properly understand without a mockup/screenshot/video

... and they should remove some of their posts, and significantly edit and improve some of their posts, make mockups for their posts, and think a little harder before posting things that are unlikely to get a single upvote.

Maybe would be good if this only applied to new users who don't already have a certain amount of upvotes, so it still counters spam but doesn't prevent legitimate use. I rarely post more than one suggestion but can imagine wanting to post several prepared suggestions in one go and would be annoying if I had to wait a day for each one.

please yes. throttle new proposals. I'd say two or three per day is probably fine for users who have a good reputation... we've got users that just joined within the past 3 months and already have nearly 100 proposals posted, and they are all generally low effort 'wish list' items that are almost entirely lacking in context and value.

While this is being discussed, we've just added a note when people are trying to publish a new idea within 24h. It doesn't stop people from posting (for now), but it will hopefully make them think twice before doing it. Let's see how this goes.

While I don't like the idea of penalizing everyone, I do think there is a need to prevent compulsive posting.

Some website do this, like stack exchange, and it works quite well. Though for it to work, it must be done in a way that does not feels like an unfair punishment but as a reward for implication.

On Stackexchange, the idea is simple: the new user has very limited features available: only reading is unlimited, but some features like voting, reporting, answering, posting or commenting are either somewhat limited (I.E. by a certain dayrate) or disabled.
The user can unlock features through points earned by constructive user implications in the community.

Meaning that, in order to be able to do basically everything, you are first limited to the bare minimum and invited to participate in the community first, which forces you to discover the tools, search for topics, notice how things work, ... And by the time you understood all that stuff you need, you have unlocked everything and reached a lot of people positively. Which lead SE to be quite a clean website and with a lot of active members that have a high implication, up to the moderation level, and allows it to be basically 100% self-managed/sustained.

I agree for 1-2 RCS submission per day for new users or for users with low reputation.

I can say that my practice exist notepad where I noting some problems and issues, and if have time going with this to community in weekend, eg. Saturday, Sunday nights. With this have some content for 5-10 post, sometimes after whole week nothing or no motivation to type anything due problems with work, etc. The open source software and environment have many problems, very often small and stupid. I spent many time around python, etc. and other solutions and know well how hard is with this in commercial road, and how expensive is with proprietary solutions.

I agree, and should be applied regardless of reputation. If those with reputation earn benefits then that is a type of gatekeeping, which is not something you want to exercise in an open-source community. Signal-to-noise ratio is relevant to every type of user, and being exclusionary is presuming that new users simply don't have good ideas. If someone wants to upload multiple proposals, there's absolutely nothing stopping them from waiting a day. I don't agree with the idea that some people should have louder voices than others, it simply does not fit this community.

Maybe it would be a better idea to send many new idea suggestions of new users or people with low reputation to a moderation queue, instead?

I am not a fan of limiting everyone on a forum just because one per day seems enough for most. I don't think I've written more than one in succession but if I need to I'd hate to space it over several days.

I could also imagine some kind of auto search for similar topics while creating the new proposal. It's been done in several forums. While you type there are possible duplicates shown next to your submit window. Might even add a large notice again over the possible duplicates stating "you might propose a duplicate. please search first."

Overreaction because of one dude much? I think majority already posts less than one post per day.

Though maybe limit of 2 might help with spam moderation (thankfully there already a lot less of spam after recent redesign).

ManBlender

The real life.. "Date 2021-08-01. RCS implemented limits 1post per day, no more post after this day" :D
..community missed ManBlender.. organized research and investigation action.. where users are :D

Why not do this in other way like "Limit everyone to see only 1 RCS submission per day." :D

Lauloque

Do you feel guilty? :D

Or perhaps trolly? :D

On a serious note, I do think there is a need to prevent compulsive posting. Some website do this, like stack exchange, and it works quite well. Though for it to work, it must be done in a way that does not feels like an unfair punishment but as a reward for implication.

ManBlender

Sure. I'm observing posts, comments. I feeling here like alien now hehe..
I broken some practice, comfort, "life of RCS" :D

Recently I had wrote two topics about wireframes and material mode features, both related to devtalks forum topic. It would be wrong to put them both in to single topic here on RCS, either to wait whole day to post second topic.

I think TWO may be optimal, at least two to post related things separately. Other possible case - maybe user post some topic, then he realize that this topic "not the best one", then think how to do better and post some new version later in same day.

thinsoldier Author

Why would they post a new one instead of editing the original?

IIIFGIII

Because maybe user want to make new one, save bad one for history )) Ok.. maybe you are right. But still, you see comments - people don't feel having only one shot per day so "ideal".
