Return of convenient layer Hotkeys?

The old layer system, albeit with obvious and now solved with grace deficiencies had one very convenient feature that boosted work speed greatly - layers were hotkey-numeric. For sake of progress this feature is essentially lost now, as Collections don’t maintain numeric order and numerical visibility hot-keys became rather a nuisance, especially with lost “show all layers” - “~” key.

Complex solutions aside, IMHO there’s a graceful one - linking Collection hotkeys to Collections Color identifiers, instead of Collection position in list. That way:

  • once assigned, a Collection won’t lose it’s ID and thus the matching hot-key.
  • it will be possible to assign multiple Collections to a single key.
  • There are 8 color codes at moment, which leaves 1 hot-key to return the show-all layers button, lack of which now is a headache when pressing a number by accident.

A stretch, but a default empty scene could have 8 collections with sequential color codes, essentially returning the hot-key layer functionality without assigning anything manually. Might be a bad idea for some reason I didn’t think of though.

I was facing the same problem when I was working on a complex scene and then by accident I pressed the view collection hot key and all the other collections but the first disappeared, and then I found out that there were no "show all collections" button, so the only way to show them was to click the eye button in the outliner editor or to press Ctrl Z, which is very slow when you have a big scene, even if the thing you are undoing is something small

* @uusamuel * pressing one to hide all top level collections except the first one is an undo-able action. Press ctrl+z next time you do it by accident.

* @thinsoldier * As @uusamuel said - undo takes long on complex scenes. Also - it would be nice to turn a problem back into a feature :)
