Make "dragging link to occupied node input switches existing link to another unoccupied one" optional
When editing node trees, Blender has a default behavior for specific node inputs that can easily lead to inadvertent mistakes:
-
If I have a Math node with an input that is already receiving a link, and I drag another link to that input, the existing link isn't replaced with the new one: its end gets switched to the next unoccupied input, instead.
-
But f I do the same to a Bright Contrast node, the new link fully replaces the existing one.
-
In the case of a Principled BSDF node, the behavior is more complex and confusing: for some inputs, the new link fully replaces the previous one, but for others the previous one jumps to a somehow related though not necessarily consecutive input (for example, from Subsurface IOR to Subsurface).
My request is for Blender to provide a Preferences option or a shortcut to disable this behavior.
The problem is not its obscure consistency (or lack of any) but the fact that:
- it makes no sense from a shading logic standpoint (it re-links outputs to wrong inputs, after all).
- At best it disrupts our flow (we have to do extra steps to correct its occurrences).
- At worst in introduces "bugs" in our node trees (if we miss an occurrence, that guarantees hours or days of debugging a node tree that we know it should work, never looking for the error there).
