Select / deselect only front objects
Blender has a problem what comes on selecting and deselecting objects. Basically Blender seems to not know if object is behind or front and it starts cycling the objects behind the mouse cursor when ever you are trying to deselect something.
That was okayish long ago when usually Blender was used for small scenes, but nowadays our scenes might have thousands of objects and deselecting one specific shouldn't be that hard.
It already works in edit mode with faces, so why not in object mode also with objects?
So, in all of the selection tool properties, there should be checkbox "select through" and you could deactivate that to prevent yourself from selecting objects that you don't wanna select.

Have you tried Blender 3.2 Beta ? This release includes a bunch of fixes in object selection.
One of the fixes is that the first click always selects the front-most object, instead of cycling through.
I have not tried it. Thanks for letting me know. I have to test that later. Does it let us deselect the objects also in a meaningful way?
