value lamp node

people use black and white only color ramps a lot. would be nice to have one that outputs floats instead of colors.

If you connect a color socket to a float socket, it converts from color to float. Also there is the RGB to B&W node in shader nodes, and for other node editors, just connect the color output to a float input and it will work. If you need color and float vales on the same color ramp, you can use alpha with color, which will not affect the color output.

Map Range and Float Curve nodes would likely be more suitable for use cases like that, than Color Ramp.

Can't you just plug the bw colour into a float input? the colour is just a way of visualise the value. You can also use map range to directly use float values without colour being involved.

That proposal is very unclear to me, from the title to the body and category tags. Can you explain again?

Also in Blender it doesn't matter if a node outputs color and you use it as a float value, it just works. Why would you need an extra float output?
