Sell Open Movies as NFT ( please read before voting )

I know this is controversial, so let's start with the main problem, please make sure you read it, because there is so much misinformation about it:

  • ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Please make sure you understand that there are two main kinds of blockchain.

  1. POW (proof of work), what everybody is scared of, requires computational power in order to "create" a block, this is what Bitcoin is based on. Even though also this is not entirely true, there are ways to avoid it ( layer 2s, rollups ) and the biggest nft blockchain right now, Ethereum, is slowly transitioning to POS anyway, read next.

  2. POS (proof of stake) the blocks are created exclusively by staking a definite amount of "coins", this reduces the energy consumption of roughly 90 - 99+%, mining farms will slowly disappear or be reduced to a minimum.

Other Blockchains that use proof of stake or layer 2 solutions ALREADY EXIST, they must not be invented or still developed, they are ready to use today. Minting one NFT on Algorand for example costs roughly 0,0004g of CO2 (estimates on Algorand Foundation), just so you have a comparable model, a single tweet is estimated to be 0,2g. This is just an example I know of, there are many other POS blockchains available and the Blender Foundation should decide which is the best.

Again, 0,0004g vs. 0,2g, the estimation is rough and can vary depending on the country and its energy cost, but the proportions would still be roughly the same.

If the Blender community is concerned about this topic, know that there are already solutions, and minting one single NFT could cost as much as a single tweet if we pick an advanced POS chain, or wait for Ethereum to move into POS.

  • OPEN-SOURCE

Most of the Blockchains are backed by a Foundation, and they are completely open-source, with no owner. Plus, any movement on the blockchain is tracked and available to review online. This is COMPLETE transparency, instantly available for everyone, automatic, non-editable, without the need to check for papers or compile annual reviews. If the Movies sell as NFTs every contributor or buyer will know where is the money going. Also, this doesn't impact in any way with the open movies being open source themselves! Blender could still be able to make the content available for anyone, create tutorials, etc... Actually, this would even make the NFT worth more for the buyer!

  • FINAL THOUGHTS

The energy consumption and CO2 emission is not a problem anymore on most POS-based chains, plus due to the low number of open movies available, minting would cost a relatively low amount anyway, even on the most expensive POW chains (in terms of energy).

Provided that the whole blockchain mechanism is open source and transparent, this is a great opportunity to be able to raise money for the Blender Foundation. And possibly a huge reward for the artists who work on the Open Movies Projects.

I believe we are a community of open-minded people, it just takes a small amount of time to do a little research. I'd appreciate you don't take anything I wrote for granted, but instead, learn it by yourself, curiosity and critiques are necessary. I really hope some solidity developers join and read this thread, so they can answer more technical questions :)

Imagine creating the first open-source, completely decentralized movie studio in the world, with no client, just freedom to create, and being completely self-sustainable at the same time.

I'm not a Blender Studio artist, nor do I gain anything out of this whole thing, I just think it's revolutionary and to avoid this topic just because of misinformative news would be anti-scientific and nonsense.

Thank you!

If you sell license for a movie it no longer be open movie.

no, the nft property doesn't impact the fact that something can still be CC0, that's why I proposed it :) I'm the topic creator btw, sorry but can't seem to log in to the other account for some reason...
