Deactivate deselected

The active object stays active even after you deselect it (LMB on empty space or [Alt+A]). It stays active even if you then select a bunch of other objects with the box select tool. The active object should be always the last selected object bpy.context.selected_objects[-1] and when nothing is selected, nothing should be active.

I can't think of any valid scenario where a deselected object should be the active object.

I completely agree. I suspect that the current way of setting an active object might be a legacy thing that is probably difficult to change and just adds an extra layer of confusion without much benefit.

It's an old topic but I would also like to have really nothing selected (and nothing in the properties settings). I specifically liked to see it for a proper use of bones colors. You have 3 states of coloring Regular, select and active. Which makes sense and helps understanding the state of each controllers. But even if you deselect everything, you'll always have one in the select state, which doesn't makes really sense in my opinion.
