Animating the pivot (object origin)

The classic "rolling cube" animation in Blender is very cumbersome because we cannot key the pivot point, moving it around. I know that we can use an empty as a pivot, but the resulting workflow is very different and cumbersome.

But the issues you'd have by using a different object or a bone as animatable pivot would be the same as if you animated the object's pivot.

And maybe I'm wrong on this, but I reckon animating an object's pivot would cause even more issues: can't really layer animations easily, can't export except in baked meshes like Alembic, poses (and copy-pasting them) won't give the same result depending on the pivot animation, ....

3dsmax/maya pivot and Blender's origin are different systems that look the same. They are not compatible.
