Overlay for Vertices sitting on each other

It would be nice to indicate if Vertices share the same point in Viewport with another color or something else.

So often if you made a mistake by extruding or copy 'n paste, etc. there will be "multiple vertices" sitting above each other in your mesh. And it's hard to figure out why your mesh is not working as intended. Mainly you come around with the merge by distance. But a better way to controlling your mesh would be if you see where the overlaying vertices are.

In addition if there are Vertices laying on each other. It would be nice for every mouseclick on that space you select the next vertex. Atm. you can only select the most top vertex.

That's great. It can also have a threshold slider for proximity that worked similar to the merge by distance operator. That can be useful to find vertices that could be merged for cleanups.

This could be expanded to more generic mesh debugging overlay options that detect other mesh defects.

The last thing you suggested is already more or less a thing. I tested by giving each vertex in a plane a different bevel weight so that I could tell them apart and then scaling the vertices to 0 so that they would be stacked. If you have your cursor centered exactly on the stack, selecting will go between each one. Weirdly, it didn't work if the cursor was even a little bit to the side and it would only go between selecting two of the verts and never selected the other two. This should be fixed imo.

Also of note, this doesn't work with grease pencil. Clicking on a stack of verts in GP will always result in selecting the vertex that is at the bottom of the stack in stroke order and will never select any of the others in the stack no matter how many times you click. This is a pretty big bummer as it happens a lot when duplicating strokes to get certain effects like having one be a fill and another be lines that doesn't cover the whole shape. At times like these, if I want to select the duplicated stroke above I usually have to either select both and then deselect the lower one or move the lower stroke out of the way so I can select the upper one. Big bummer all around.

Thx for the info and is also interesting. But it implies you had have control over certain vertices. And you had to do a lot of circumstances with vertex paint. It wouldn't solve to figuring out which Vertices come into question e. g. mistaken extrudes, etc. Also it would nice to have a comfortable way to select those Vertices during modeling insteat fiddeling around.

Well no, I didn't use vertex paint, in the Sidebar (N) under Item > Vertex Data you can edit bevel weights of selected vertices directly. That's besides the point though, I wasn't saying that you could do that to figure out which vertices you were selecting. I was just explaining how I tested whether or not selecting a stack of vertices would select one vertex in the stack after another as you mentioned at the end of the proposal.

I was also not saying that it would help with figuring out which vertices come into question. I was simply responding to the last part that said it would be nice if we had a feature that is already implemented.

Good idea. There is already special overlay for unconnected verts, square dots:

Something similar for overlapping verts would be very helpful and reduce potential errors when modelling or cleaning up geometry.
