Blender 2.8 Select Border / Deselect
Coming from other softwares, I find myself trying to deselect all by dragging in the empty viewport. So my simple ideea is . Why not implement something like this in Select Border .
When you are in Select Border mode, when you drag in empty viewport, you deselect all . Everything with just the mouse not doing the Alt + A . And when you Double-Click an element ( vertex, edge, face ) it selects all connected elements .

How about just clicking to empty space for deselecting? That is also pretty much a standard.
@Okavango: Clicking, dragging all standard behaviors . I went with dragging because sometimes you click in empty space by mistake and you don't want to deselect :) .
@giakaama:
I posted something like this in the devs forums. The simplest solution is to add a behavior that clears the selection and starts a new one.
"shift drag select" adds to selection set.
"ctrl (or alt) drag select" removes from selection set.
"drag select" clears the selection set and starts a new one. (This behavior is missing)
That way dragging in empty space clears the selection set exactly the way you want. But it also speeds up modeling by eliminating the step where you have to consciously deselect between manipulations.
You go from
select/manipulate/deselect - select/manipulate/deselect - select/manipulate/deselect
to
select/manipulate - select/manipulate - select/manipulate - select/manipulate
And you know, when you forget to deselect between manipulations, so you have to deselect everything and painstakingly redo your selection from scratch ? That doesn't happen anymore either. Now the worst case is you accidentally clear your selection, and "undo" instantly gets it back.

@velu: Yeah, I think the industry standard key map will give us what we wanted here .
Post like this better
@1to3fall5: Wow, gifs works :) . I've tried to insert gifs in the past and they transformed in jpg's .
Based on this selection maybe it's a good ideea to add a select through . Something like this

I know you could activate the select through but I find it breaking my flow because it's one more click I have to do ( one more push of the shortcut ) . Right now we have this select through by script " KUDOS TO HEAVYPOLY " but It can be a good ideea to have it implemented directly in Blender .
I found a video what helped me to get more familiar select/deselect behaviour. This is not exactly what you were asking but maybe you can adjust the idea to fit your needs. youtube.com/watch
I am all for it.
Iin the meantime, I found this , which shows you how to add an input command to deselect all by double-clicking on empty space. I find it more useful than single clicking, because you avoid deselecting by mistake. It looks like this
And Shift+ Drag to add to current selection Alt + Drag should remove items in the border from current selection. (Don't have a copy of Blender in front of me so I'm not sure if this is already existing functionality)
@ammusionist: Yep good additions too .
