Float Ramp node

I surprised myself and a lot of other artists / TDs using "Color Ramp" nodes even while working only with float values.

Most of the time, those workflow could either be replaced by using a Map Range node (if only tweaking 2 stops for example) or Float Curve node, which is essentially exactly like a "Float Ramp" node in terms of overall behavior, but it simply has a different UI, and a lot of people might enjoy the Ramp UI better than curves.

The issue is minimal but still there: Why bother converting float values to color information, when we're not planning on involving any color data in it ? Especially since color is heavier than float, it reduces slightly the performance on big setups.

The logical way would be to simply use Float Curve node, but even tho it has exactly the same behavior. But Float Curve simply has a different UI that correlates with a lot of artist's workflow and thinking. Therefore I believe it could be a great addition to have a "Float Ramp" node

The main benefits would be :

  • Performance : Avoid converting float to color if you're only dealing with float all along
  • UI : Similar to Float Curve, but uses the ramp node UI instead which a lot of people like
