Light Linking

Light linking is something every major 3D package has; the ability to "mask" lights to any object to have heavily increased control over the look of your scene. Currently we only have render layers, but this very quickly becomes finicky, and isn't intuitive or fast to use to begin with.

Maybe having the option to include/exclude via the ctrl+L popup window would be quick and easy?

I vote BIG YES for light linking - used it all the time in 3dsMax as it offer a ton of flexibility in getting lights just right.

I was making a turntable yesterday with a simple model, a ground and a 3 point lighting. I wished I could exclude my ground from the back light...

* @-L0Lock- * Put a plane in front of the light like a barn door, and make the plane invisible to camera. Instant blocker.

* @Stephen Bailey * Yes, and it blocks the light from lighting my model. :/

i too would very much like to see light linking added. it is vital for many scenes and when used subtly can make a scene much better with relatively little effort.

So currently, no experimental build of Blender includes this, except for the custom build by Tangent Animation?

Exclusion/inclusion lists are pretty basic, and should be included. :+1:

Include the inclusion 😂

I'm new here but having used FurryBall in Maya I can say being able to have a plane as light cutter in the frame but not visible is very very useful.. As is being able to chose which object is lit by a light source. Thanks

We really need light linking. Can it come soon?

2 years people asking for this feature with no result with 3.3 ver . very sad

MontyPike

OMG !!!
Has it been 2 years since this thread was opened? And nothing has happened yet? I switched from Softimage XSI to Blender 3.3 two months ago. Now I see that blender does not have light linking, what all the others have for decades.

Hope blender integrates this very important feature as soon as possible and not 20 years later.

if ambient light, which comes from the world settings, is also included, then the topic of light linking would be solved. So also shadow casting from the environment texture or whatever.

BlendNewb

This ^ and proper alembic support is keeping me from switching over to blender. Exiting to see that there seems to be development going on for both of these points. Can't wait!

This feature is so important to have. I hope we will get it soon.

trailofsevens

Switched from C4D/RS and really missing this, the ability to include/exclude lights is so useful in so many ways. Just learnt about render layers as a suggested alternative but it's just not as quick, user-friendly, or as flexible unfortunately.

Glad to see it's in development, hopefully with simple include/exclude functionality.

guguai

How long will it take to use this? I really need this cool feature
