An actual warning asking for confirmation to overwrite an existing file name and other improvements in that area.

I was in the middle of saving A.blend as A2.blend but I got distracted before I pressed the "Save As" button.

I came back several minutes later remembering that I needed to make a change to B.blend

I saw the "Blender File View" window was open already and just double clicked B.blend which replaced B.blend with the contents of A.blend.

I AM RED GREEN COLOR BLIND so I did not notice the red color in the file name box.

Because I was in the mindset to open a file I only really looked at the top of window. Having "save as" in the title bar of the window would have been helpful.

The colors in the white box are almost indistinguishable to me depending on how sleepy I am, especially that dark red color.

Yes, this is urgently needed. I already lost several projects because of this UI/UX flaw.. I really can't think of a reason not to have such standard feature..

I already asked for this, but it seems impossible to convince the people in charge of it that this overwrite dialog is a crucial thing to have... See: blenderartists.org/t/file-save-dialogs-and-prompts/1197354

* @TheRedWaxPolice * Yeah even if they refuse to add the dialog they could at least make it so the ONLY thing that would overwrite the file is clicking the Save As button. In my case I double clicked another file (thinking I was opening it) and it wrote to that file name. I can't think of any other program that does this. Yes most programs will replace the file name text box with the name of the file you clicked but double clicking a file does not automatically save it.

This 100%! I've read through the couple of threads about this and I just don't understand how it could be any more difficult to implement than "when using save as, if file with same name exists in folder, prompt before saving."

I fully agree ! This menu is unsafe. I lost too many files where a simple solution like this would have prevented all my losses.

Please also do this for renders! Sometimes, I forget to rename my file path, and I end up overwriting a previous rendered file (for both viewport render and actual render plz).

This absolutely needs fixing. The pop-up is the best way to go for sure. In the meantime you may be able to mess around with the UI settings to get something more obvious to you. You could try some of the existing themes too, some have more contrast overall.
