Bbone display rework

Sometimes it's hard to tell the orientation of a bone if their draw type is in bbone.

This doesn't tend to be an issue since I can just always rotate it to figure out which one is the head and which one is the tail. But I think having an additional visual indicator would make telling them apart easier.

Here's a few of shapes I came up with: Screenshot 2023-12-08 at 8.06.56.png

On the very left we have the default bbone, on the very right we have default octahedral.

I personally really like the middle one as it keeps both a clean and recognizable look of the rectangle-shaped bbone while having 2 additional visual helpers

  • Sphere: for the head and round shape indicating rotation pivot origin

  • Square: for the tail, indicating the end of the bone length

I like the middle one best, but I really doubt I would like it as much in a chain. A big reason why octahedral works is because the head/tail direction is told by the body while the actual heads and tails can overlap without creating more visual clutter.

If you put the visual cue on the head/tail and keep the body blank, then once you get a chain: the heads/tails will become one undistinguishable clutter while the bodies will still indicate nothing.

The other propositions look fine as a normal bbone and would probably look fine as a chain of bones. But I wonder how it would look if you set the bones ad bendy bones.

Yeah agreed, the identifier(s) would have to be on the body. What about something like this? BBoneWithHeadCubeIdentifier

I think it would also have issues with bendy bones

I was thinking it would have the identifier shape on the first segment of the bendy bone like this BendyBBoneHeadIdentifier And it would shrink in length if the bone/segment is short. Honestly not sure I like this aesthetically though.

Had a similar thought awhile ago. One important thing a I want to add is - the shape of the bone should ideally give a hint where X and Z axes are aligned to. I know it can be done with axes being made visible, but a little tine thingy on the bone shape could've make it more comfortable.
