Using GIF's in video editor

Hi everyone,

Simple question from me - I am completely new to Blender, I heard through a friend that it was a very good video editing software. My plan is to start producing videos for a guitar Vlog. I have created a GIF image with the purpose of serving as my intro sequence, through what I have read it appears that GIF's may not be a supported format in Blender, is this true?

If so will I need to use an alternative video editing software if I want to use this GIF image?

I wouldn't say that. Blender is a powerful 3D creation suite with a very basic simplistic video editing tool in it.

For now, it's more like an additional basic & handy tool added in Blender for rendering and doing very basic editing on scenes within Blender without needing to render everything then send it to editing externally.

But compared to true video editing software it's miles away. It really does lack features and ergonomy. If you want to do video editing, use a video editing software. There are plenty of them in thre free software world, like Shotcut, Kdenlive, OpenShot, Cinelerra, ... And also Natron for node based post fx.

You can by using the Bligify add-on. Once you've downloaded and installed it, go to the Video Sequence editor, open the Properties Region (with N), scroll down to Bligify and click on "Gif Import". Note that this will generate an image sequence in the same folder as the gif file so that Blender can import it.

Check out the Bligify addon. With it, you can import and export animated GIFs from Blender's VSE.

Most video editing sofwares wont support gifs because they arent a video format and its very low quality so you dont want to use that in a video. Most Likely you want to use Quicktime's MOV file... you gan go to ezgif.com and convert it there and then get it into blender, that's what I do when I have special cases like this.

This is not exactly the right site to post this question: better Blenderartists or Blender stackexchange. Btw, as far as I know, Blender VSE doesn't accept gif animations, as bad as many other video editing software won't I guess
