Rip tool preview before operation
Basically the rip tool currently works like this. You make a selection of vertices and then place your mouse cursor towards the direction to which you want to rip and press v and blender rips the edges toward that direction.
However that does not always work and certain modifiers totally break this and make the ripped edge become totally random. For example I have this simple mesh with a bezier modifier. Selection and mouse cursor looks like this:
And when you press V you get this:
Totally wrong edges selected. And the worst part is no matter how I try to guess the correct angle I never get the edge ripped that I want. Impossible. I have to manually rip that corner apart one vertex at a time until I get what I want.
Solution: make the rip tool initiate with the v key and finish with mouse click like loopcutslide does. In the image above you press v and you get this:
As you move your mouse around the selection different edges become highlighted to indicate what edges are about to be ripped. Now you can move your mouse around and find the right spot where you get the edges ripped that you want. Then just click and you get what you see.
And even better this highlighting teaches the user how the rip tool works. I never knew you had to place your mouse cursor at certain place with the rip tool to get a certain result until I saw it in some random youtube video. I thought it was random and I'm sure lots of people do.
And with this approach you can even add mouse wheel to the mix. Scroll mousewheel up and down to rip more edges. For example if you have a vertex selected with 12 polygons around it you can scroll mouse wheel to 6 and rip half of the vertices. In that earlier example you can scroll mouse wheel to 2 and rip all but one face off of that vertice. Same workflow as loop-cut-slide. Takes one more click but the benefits are big. Easier to learn and use the tool, tool is more flexible and precise and this even fixes some issues the rip tool currently has. The extra one click is effectively cost free as you need your hand on the mouse anyways to use the rip tool.

Yea I've known about this annoyance for a long time :7 Random ripping is annoying and requires extra steps to work with.
