Dedicated Select/Deselect

It is often very difficult to add to or remove from a selection when objects are overlapping or simply close to other objects. For instance trying to add to a selection using shift click in these situations will often deselect an active object. In other situations, you're trying to deselect an object that is in the selection set, but instead you make it active. Shift click it again, and it makes another object active.

We need a dedicated key/click combo that fixes this situation. The workflow will be greatly improved. In these situations I often have to select a subset of what I'm wanting to select, move it to a new layer, then continue doing this until everything I need to select is on a single layer. This is too much.

I propose shift+click adds to the selection and ONLY adds to the selection. Shift+CTRL+click removes from the selection and ONLY removes from the selection. This will greatly reduce the amount of zooming, clicking and workarounds needed to get a good selection.

I agree that the "active change" being always triggered is a problem and your solution is interesting. My addon active swap partly solve this problem. Try it out while you wait ^^, it was just experimental at first, now I use it constantly (but mostly for iterating the active over selection). I made a demo video for it that exactly illustrate the problem you explain (at 00:35)
