Sculpting: Layer for Texture and Vertex Paint
It would be nice to have layers for texture paint and vertex paint in sculpt mode. Then we can blend the layers like in any other patinting tool with opacity, multiply, burn etc.

- For Texture Painting:
I'm thinking about a layer system for the image your working on campared to classical drawing with Photoshop, Krita, etc. I'm not talking about Layer System for a complete PBR material. Which would be still cool but a step above. Keep it simple in a first glance.
While Blender holds the information about images used in a project (unique ID) it could be linked with a layer system so everywhere you paint on that image you can use the layer.
Or extending the Image Texture Node with a layer system. Maybe by stacking multiple images together (not just one) in one Image Texture Node which are then connected each other as a Layer System. This could be then the first step if going into a complete PBR Layer System later.
- For Vertex Painting:
This is another story while you need to link a Layer System to the Color Attribute of Vertices and not to an image like explained above. Atm. Color Attributes can be used like a very simple layer system. But this is not very comfortable.
But for both "Paintings" the Layer System could be the same just linked to that specific object.
Every time you do Vertex Paint or Image Paint the layers can be shown in the N-Panel. Where you can add remove or shift them. By double clicking on a layer you get an additional option popup/dialog for color burn, opacity, multiply, mask, filter, etc. known from drawing apps.

Thx for the info. Didn't know it. But this is a discussion about a Layer System for a complete PBR Material wich would be very cool but my attempt is a bit simpler and different. I clarified my request above.
