Viewer node as Image Texture for realtime compositing

I tried to use the viewer node in my material and I realized it's not usable as is and it just turn itself pink.

it would be really useful to be able to directly use the viewer node image in materials without the need to save the image first.

I will show an example where it can really improve any compositing workflow:

This is the current workflow:

  1. Bake an image, for example AO map
  2. Edit the AO in compositor.
  3. Save the image.
  4. Use the image in a material to see the result in the viewport.
  5. Adjusting things in the compositor.
  6. Save the image again.
  7. Reload the image in blender.
  8. View the new result on the 3D model
  9. Etc..

With the viewer node as Image Texture:

  1. Bake the AO map
  2. Edit the AO in compositor.
  3. Add the viewer node in a material.
  4. Adjust things in the compositor and see the result in realtime in the viewport
  5. Save the image.

In other words, allowing the viewer node to be used directly as an texture image would make everything faster for compositing in realtime without the hassle of saving the viewer node into an image everytime.

I think this 'workflow' will be solved when texture nodes have been implemented. Using the compositor for this is not the right tool for the job. See code.blender.org/2022/02/layered-textures-design/ about the initial design.

Why I think the compositor isn't the correct tool is because the goal of the compositor is to tweak/alter the final result after rendering. Doing this before rendering requires different tools and functionality.

I didn't know about texture nodes. it seems really powerful without the need of the compositor at all. I really hope it will be available soon.
