Add a Curvature Node to Shader Nodes

I suggest adding a dedicated Curvature node to Blender’s Shader Editor.

What I want most from this node is a more stable and higher-quality curvature result than Pointiness . Pointiness can work on simple models, but on complex models, industrial models, CAD-converted models, hard-surface assets, or models with less clean topology, the result is often not ideal. It also feels difficult to reach the quality of Curvature nodes in other major renderers.

Blender’s viewport shading options seem to already have a similar curvature display feature. I am not sure whether it can be directly used for Shader Nodes, but maybe it could give developers some reference.

I know that using model normals together with bevel information can already produce some decent curvature-like results. However, I still have some hope that Blender could improve the underlying curvature algorithm and provide a cleaner, more reliable solution directly in Shader Nodes.

A Curvature node could be used to generate procedural material masks, such as edge wear, chipped paint, dust buildup, rust, moss, snow, edge highlights, and stylized edge effects.

I hope the node can provide some basic controls, such as Mode, Radius, Strength, Bias / Contrast, and Quality / Samples . For outputs, it should at least provide Fac . If possible, it would also be useful to have Convex and Concave outputs.

I would also like to know how much interest there is in this feature from the community. For material creation, hard-surface assets, industrial models, or procedural texturing workflows, do others also want Blender to provide a higher-quality Curvature node? What is the main reason people want it: better edge wear and dust buildup, or a more stable and cleaner curvature mask?

In summary, I hope Blender can add a truly high-quality Curvature node, rather than simply replacing Pointiness. The key point is to let complex models and industrial models get cleaner, more stable, and more natural curvature results.

That node is under development, it would be great if you could leave some feedback. projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/152402
