2.8 proposal : Streamlining multi selection (box, lasso, brush)
Selection and manipulation are one of the things we do most often when modeling. After trying 2.8, I love the permanent box select, it feels great. And I think adding one simple behavior to this would enhance modeling flow a lot.
When using selection modes like Box, lasso, brush, etc ... Right now, in 2.8 we have :
- "drag select" : Adds to the selection set or starts a new one if none exists
- "ctrl drag select" : Removes from the selection set
- "A" : Clears the selection set
I'd like to add this behavior
- "shift drag select" : Clears the existing selection set and starts a new one.
No more need to press A to unselect, we can eliminate one click in three on an operation we do thousands of times while modeling. No more forgetting to unselect your verts from your previous operation. If you're used to unselecting with A, you can still do that. And if you accidentally clear your selection, undo retrieves it.
That way your workflow goes from :
- select, manipulate, press A to unselect all, select, manipulate, press A to unselect all
to
- select, manipulate, select, manipulate, select, manipulate.
*** In the above example, I'm using the modifier keys already present in Blender 2.8 to avoid controversy, but my personal preference would be for shift to "add", ctrl to "remove" and the default drag select to "clear selection and start a new one" to stay consistent with the single click select mode.
Thank you for your consideration. :)

Good proposal, I also thought of something like this for easier, more standard usage:
