Holdout material should only act on its collection- thus masking ability without nodes.
Its too bad that you can't use holdout for masking without composite nodes. The holdout should just 'hide' the parts of objects that are in your SAME collection only.... thus leaving other collection alone to perhaps show a background image "in front" of the area wher e the holdout is 'masking'
So the holdout plane can be used as a mask for anything in its collection..and leave the other collections alone so it would look like this porg has a hulahoop in the viewer as well as render (eevee and cycles)

Perhaps, an option of selecting working on: -all -collection -Vertex group -objects and object groups
:)
1 object can be in infinite different collections. Blender needs actual groups and actual layers for this feature.
You can do this already, you just have to use the render layers.
