Merge by distance should result in straight lines when it's reasonable to expect straight lines.
I can't just merge these by distance. The result is a crooked line.
I have to scale everything down to zero in Z in order for it to work. When working at an agle not aligned with a global axis I have to first make a custom axis and scale to zero before I can merge.
If merge by distance worked more sensibly it would save a lot of extra steps.

A solution to this would be to calculate the merged vertices center as it was suggested in this proposal .
The Weld modifier already has this!
In you case it may be predicted. In billions other possible cases it impossible to predict how this " straightiness " should look like. IMO - such thing will never be implemented...
What solve your case now - Zaloopok addon
API was changed for a bit so now it give errors. Addon need update for current version. For this " Convert Edges " it need to replace 1 row to not get error.
Or just remove this row if you don't want to get individual origins pivot mode each time you do this convert.
* @IIIFGIII * I dont see a reason why it is not treated as a bug. I created similar model and tested in other editors. I dont understand why it cant be implemented when other software has this behavior for years.
* @zelfit * should be treated as bug in this case indeed
* @zelfit * in this case I use GG or M collapse or m at center. So it is possible in blender to make it.
Accepted as TO DO and added to Medium Term developer.blender.org/T78916
Average points and unselected to selected will be handy
Yes, upvoted. For now here's a workaround for that case: select one outer loop and slide (G+G) until the center, repeat for the other outer loop. Now Merga, without headaches
* @ Lsscpp * you could even turn on "auto merge" before sliding the edges
Good proposal! Please edit the links like below to activate direct preview.
A better approach in this case is to select the vertical edge rows and collapse them,
